The 10 Best Luxury Train and Scenic Rail Journeys in 2026
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Train Journeys So Scenic You’ll Forgive Them for Having No Wi-Fi

A royal train through Portugal’s port country. A narrow-gauge ride across a hundred Alpine gorges. A vintage steam run on South Africa’s Garden Route. Japan’s lottery-only cruise train. These are the 2026 rail journeys worth slowing down for, from €750 day trips to ordinary-ticket scenic lines.

Intro

Luxury rail had a big 2026. Belmond took the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express to the Amalfi Coast. La Dolce Vita Orient Express is about to run Rome to Istanbul. Golden Eagle pulled a private train 3,862km along the Silk Road. And Saudi Arabia’s Dream of the Desert slipped to 2027. Trains: they’re late even when they’re fancy.

But the famous names already get loads of coverage. This list looks one notch below them. National-rail luxury trains like Spain’s Transcantábrico and India’s Golden Chariot. A one-day royal train in the Douro. A new 3.5-star vintage rail holiday in the Western Cape. And the regular scenic lines that Reddit’s Swiss, Norwegian and Japanese travel crowds swear beat the branded panoramic trains.

How we picked: human feedback first, from Reddit threads (r/askswitzerland, r/NorwayTravelAdvice, r/JapanTravelTips, r/FATTravel, r/ViaRail, r/AskAnAustralian, r/SriLankaTravel), read at snippet level and used qualitatively only. No invented counts. Then editorial reviews (Telegraph, Sydney Morning Herald, Time Out, Evening Standard, Seat61, Lonely Planet, Travel and Retreat, trade press), then value and availability from official operator pages, all link-checked on 9 Oct 2026. Editorial “Best For” calls came last. No star ratings, because we didn’t capture live ones. Prices are only those printed by the cited operator or outlet, and may change. Mega-famous icons (VSOE, the Jacobite) appear as reference rows, and Glacier Express, Bernina and Rocky Mountaineer are kept as benchmarks outside the top 10.

1. Comboio Presidencial, Douro Valley, Portugal

Comboio Presidencial
Comboio Presidencial, Douro Valley, Portugal. Photo: sanjorgepinho via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0.

The hook: A train built for a king, a menu by a celebrity chef, and Douro vineyards out the window. Watch for the next edition’s dates.

Operator: CP (Comboios de Portugal) + National Railway Museum Foundation + chef Chakall · Route: Porto São Bento → Ferradosa (Douro Valley), Portugal

The Telegraph calls it “the luxurious Portuguese train journey you’ve probably never heard of.” The Comboio Presidencial was built in 1890 for King Luís I. When Portugal became a republic, it got renamed the Presidential Train and carried heads of state (Queen Elizabeth II and Pope Paul VI among them) until it retired to the National Railway Museum in 1970. Now it’s restored for the main line and runs from Porto São Bento up the Douro Valley.

The official site describes 20 exclusive trips for just 72 passengers each (the Telegraph said around a dozen a year), with a menu by Argentine-Portuguese chef Chakall. Per the official timetable it leaves Porto at 10:50, reaches Ferradosa at 14:11, gives you time among the vineyards, then heads back at 18:24 (Porto at 21:55). A full day of port, a royal carriage and a nap on the way home. Peak civilisation.

The catch is timing. The 2025 edition is closed, and CP says the next edition’s dates and prices are still to be announced. Watch cp.pt and comboiopresidencial.pt and pounce. On a budget? The regular CP Douro line runs on the same tracks for a regional fare (see the shortlist below).

Key Features

  • 1890 royal/presidential carriages (National Railway Museum)
  • Gourmet menu by chef Chakall
  • Only 72 guests per departure; ~20 trips per edition (official site)
  • Douro Valley riverside line to Ferradosa
  • Day trip from Porto São Bento, back by ~22:00
  • From €750 pp (CP / Telegraph)

Best For: Food-and-wine travellers in Porto who want one big splurge day rather than a week-long rail cruise.

Visit / Book: www.cp.pt/info/en/w/presidential-train

2. El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo, Northern Spain

The hook: Fourteen suites, four regions and lunch at a different restaurant every day. Spain’s north at sleeper-train speed.

Operator: Renfe Trenes Turísticos de Lujo (Spanish state rail) · Route: San Sebastián ↔ Santiago de Compostela (Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, Galicia), Spain

Renfe’s flagship luxury train is one of Europe’s least-hyped great rail journeys. Per the 2026 brochure, its 7 sleeping cars hold only 14 Gran Lujo suites. The 8-day, 7-night Northern Route runs between San Sebastián and Santiago de Compostela through the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia: high mountains, river valleys and the Cantabrian sea. A luxury coach shadows the train. Inclusions cover all meals at top local restaurants, museum and show tickets, onboard music and parties in the pub car, and a multilingual guide. Yes, there’s a pub car. Spain gets it.

Agent Palace Tours also lists a Renfe offer of a free train ticket from anywhere in Spain to the start city and back. Short on time? The 4-day, 3-night routes (Oviedo-San Sebastián, Santiago-Gijón) cost €4,250 per person in 2026, less than half the full week. Remaining October departures are in the official brochure, and some dates already show as sold out with agents, so book through Renfe’s reservation centre or a listed partner agency.

Key Features

  • Only 14 Gran Lujo suites across 7 sleeping cars
  • San Sebastián ↔ Santiago (8d/7n) or 4d/3n short routes
  • All meals incl. lunches/dinners in top local restaurants
  • Luxury coach + multilingual guide on excursions
  • Pub-car live music and parties
  • 2026 from €4,250 pp (4d) / €9,900 pp (8d)

Best For: Couples who want a slow, food-led luxury rail cruise through a corner of Europe most Americans haven’t seen.

3. Centovalli Railway, Switzerland to Italy

Centovalli Railway
Centovalli Railway, Switzerland to Italy. Photo: User LittleJoe / LittleJoe via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0.

The hook: A hundred gorges, two countries, one ordinary ticket. The Swiss scenic ride the locals actually recommend.

Operator: FART (Ticino) / SSIF (Italy), Ferrovia Vigezzina-Centovalli · Route: Locarno, Switzerland ↔ Domodossola, Italy (Centovalli / Valle Vigezzo)

Swiss locals on Reddit keep steering visitors away from the all-day Glacier Express and toward smaller lines. One r/askswitzerland reply suggests going Visp → Domodossola, then taking “the narrow gauge train through Centovalli to Locarno.” Orange Travel’s 2026 Swiss panoramic-trains guide calls the Centovalli “a quiet gem that costs a fraction of the branded trains,” threading “a valley of a hundred gorges into Italy.” And yes, the operator is called FART. We are adults. We will not comment.

The official stop list runs through small Centovalli and Valle Vigezzo villages like Intragna, Santa Maria Maggiore and Re, so it’s perfect for a hop-on, hop-off day. Combine it with the Simplon line through Domodossola, or finish by Lake Maggiore in Locarno. Got a Swiss Travel Pass and a free afternoon? This is the ride. We didn’t capture fares, so check the official site for tickets and timetables.

Key Features

  • Narrow-gauge line through the ‘valley of a hundred gorges’
  • Cross-border Switzerland → Italy
  • Village stops: Intragna, Santa Maria Maggiore, Re
  • Links the Simplon line (Domodossola) to Lake Maggiore (Locarno)
  • Ordinary ticket, no panoramic-train surcharge
  • Great as a loop with the Simplon or Glacier routes

Best For: Budget-savvy rail fans and Lake Maggiore visitors who want Alpine-gorge drama without a CHF 50 reservation fee.

4. The Golden Chariot, South India

The Golden Chariot
The Golden Chariot, South India. Photo: Ichattopadhyaya via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0.

The hook: Tiger reserves, a maharaja’s palace and Hampi’s boulder-strewn ruins, with the price list printed in plain sight.

Operator: IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) · Route: Bengaluru round trips: Bandipur, Mysuru, Hampi and Goa (Karnataka), plus Tamil Nadu & Kerala (Jewels of South), India

The Golden Chariot is the luxury train most travellers don’t realise India runs in the south. IRCTC upgraded it for the 2026-27 season (ET Infra, Outlook Traveller). Every route starts in Bengaluru. Pride of Karnataka (5 nights, 6 days) covers Bandipur, Mysuru, Halebidu, Chikkamagaluru, Hampi and Goa. Glimpses of Karnataka (3 nights, 4 days) is the short version, and Jewels of South adds Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Fares are published openly in USD and INR, which is rare for a luxury train. Refreshing! The official tariff is per person, twin share, with 5% GST on top. First 2026-27 departures are 24 Oct (Pride of Karnataka) and 31 Oct (Glimpses of Karnataka), with Jewels of South following on 28 Nov. A news report mentions discounts on selected departures, but that isn’t on the official tariff page, so ask when you enquire.

Key Features

  • 3 routes: Pride of Karnataka, Glimpses of Karnataka, Jewels of South
  • Bandipur safari country + Mysuru palace
  • Hampi UNESCO ruins
  • All-inclusive guided excursions
  • From USD 3,400 pp (3N) / USD 5,000 pp (5N), twin share + 5% GST
  • 2026-27 season starts 24 Oct 2026

Best For: First-timers in India who want wildlife, palaces and UNESCO ruins handled end-to-end.

5. The Mossel Bay Explorer, South Africa

The Mossel Bay Explorer
The Mossel Bay Explorer, South Africa. Photo: Fihliwe from Hobart, Australia via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 2.0.

The hook: Vintage carriages, a coastal steam run and a dress code of “whatever’s comfy.”

Operator: Cape Rail Company (formerly Ceres Rail Company) · Route: Cape Town → Swellendam → Mossel Bay → Montagu → Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

South Africa’s newest rail holiday is the warm, unstuffy opposite of a white-glove sleeper. Cape Rail Company (ceresrail.co.za now redirects to caperail.co.za) runs the Mossel Bay Explorer over six days, four of them on the train. You ride vintage lounge and observation coaches with an onboard coffee bar, from Cape Town through Wellington and Worcester, over vineyards and mountain passes to Swellendam, then on to Mossel Bay for three nights. A steam locomotive joins at Albertinia when operations allow. A steam run from Santos to Great Brak River includes a buffet lunch at Oppi-Stasie, and the return goes via Montagu.

Nights are in hand-picked guesthouses and hotels, not on board, and the operator calls it “a curated 3.5-star adventure… without luxury formality.” Leave the tux at home. The inaugural run was 7-12 May 2026, and the operator’s page now shows R 27 450, without saying what basis that’s on, so confirm per-person pricing and 2027 dates. Ages 8 and up are welcome, which makes it a family pick too.

Key Features

  • Vintage lounge + observation coaches, onboard coffee bar
  • Cape Town → Swellendam → Mossel Bay (3 nights) → Montagu
  • Steam run Santos → Great Brak River with lunch
  • Nights in hand-selected guesthouses and hotels
  • Ages 8+
  • Official price shown R 27 450

Best For: Rail romantics and families with teens who want vintage character and a coastal steam run, not a dress code.

Visit / Book: caperail.co.za/experiences/mossel-bay-explorer

6. Al Andalus, Andalusia, Spain

The hook: Spain’s longest passenger train comes with royal saloon cars and a week of Moorish palaces.

Operator: Renfe Trenes Turísticos de Lujo · Route: Madrid → Córdoba, Granada, Seville, Cádiz and more (Andalusia), Spain

Sydney Morning Herald Traveller (May 2026) calls Al Andalus a “lesser-known luxury train journey” that “exceeded all my previous railway adventures.” At 450m it’s Spain’s longest passenger train. Two locomotives pull 15 cars: seven sleeping cars and four saloon coaches, including two dining cars, a piano-bar salon and a reception car British royalty used in the 1920s. It’s so hard to move and park that it only runs a few journeys a year. Imagine trying to parallel park that.

The 6-night, 7-day Andalusia itinerary visits Córdoba, Granada, Seville and Cádiz, departing from Madrid in 2026. SMH puts deluxe ensuite compartments, all meals, wine with lunch and dinner, and guided tours from €10,080. Departures are rare, so lock in a date early. Pair it with the Transcantábrico for a two-train Spain holiday.

Key Features

  • 450m, 15-car train: longest passenger train in Spain
  • 1920s saloon cars once used by British royalty
  • Piano-bar salon + two dining cars
  • Córdoba, Granada, Seville, Cádiz in a week
  • Deluxe ensuite compartments
  • From €10,080 (SMH, May 2026)

Best For: Culture-first travellers who want the Alhambra, Seville and Córdoba with the logistics (and the wine) handled.

7. Seven Stars in Kyushu, Japan

Seven Stars in Kyushu
Seven Stars in Kyushu, Japan. Photo: Rsa via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0.

The hook: The hardest train ticket in Japan, with an application window that ran 1-20 October 2026.

Operator: JR Kyushu (Kyushu Railway Company) · Route: Round trips from Hakata (Fukuoka) around Kyushu, Japan

Seven Stars in Kyushu is Japan’s best-known luxury “cruise train.” Its multi-day journeys loop around Kyushu with a big focus on local artisans and food (“connection to the locals” gets a whole section on the official site). Booking works unlike almost any other train. You apply during a published window through JR Kyushu’s official form. Email reservations aren’t accepted. Oversubscribed departures go to a lottery. Getting a seat is basically winning a very elegant raffle.

The official application page confirmed the current window as 1-20 October 2026, for journeys March-August 2027. Apply as a party of up to four, everyone must be 12 or older, and lottery results arrive by email in late November (per the official FAQ). That window has now closed, so watch for the next one. We didn’t capture prices. JR Kyushu’s contracted agents can help international guests.

Key Features

  • JR Kyushu’s flagship cruise train
  • Multi-day journeys around Kyushu
  • Lottery-based allocation
  • Application window 1-20 Oct 2026 for Mar-Aug 2027
  • Up to 4 guests per application, age 12+
  • Strong focus on local artisans and cuisine

Best For: Japan repeat visitors who plan a year ahead and want the most coveted rail ticket in the country.

Visit / Book: www.cruisetrain-sevenstars.jp/english/application

8. Bergen Line, Oslo to Bergen, Norway

Bergen Line
Bergen Line, Oslo to Bergen, Norway. Photo: Hermann Christian Neupert via Wikimedia Commons, Public domain.

The hook: The Oslo-Bergen mainline that Reddit rates above its own famous branch line.

Operator: Vy (Norwegian rail operator) · Route: Oslo → Geilo → Finse → Myrdal → Bergen, Norway

The Oslo-Bergen railway climbs across the Hardangervidda plateau past Finse and its glacier views, on an ordinary train ticket. Most people agree it lives up to the hype. Meanwhile r/Norway and r/NorwayTravelAdvice keep asking whether the Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) is overrated. The consensus in the snippets we saw: the short Flåm branch is crowded, tunnel-heavy and touristy, and best only as part of a fjord loop. The main Bergen Line is the genuinely spectacular one. Sorry, Flåm.

Rail guides (Oslo Spirit, Fjordscout) say take a daytime train, book early, and grab right-hand seats (B/D) from Oslo for the glacier side. If you want Flåm, overnight there instead of cramming Oslo-Flåm-Bergen into one day. It’s an ordinary Vy ticket, so early booking gets the best fares.

Key Features

  • Hardangervidda mountain plateau
  • Finse station and glacier views
  • Daytime services for scenery
  • Sit right side (B/D) Oslo → Bergen
  • Change at Myrdal for the Flåm branch
  • Ordinary Vy fare, no luxury surcharge

Best For: Independent travellers who want a world-class scenic line on an ordinary ticket.

Visit / Book: www.vy.no/en

9. Golden Eagle Danube Express, Istanbul to Budapest

The hook: Transylvanian castles, a Bran Castle dinner and none of the Venice crowd.

Operator: Golden Eagle Luxury Trains (UK, 35-year operator) · Route: Istanbul → Bulgaria → Romania (Transylvania) → Budapest

Golden Eagle Luxury Trains is the specialist operator most people haven’t heard of. Its Danube Express runs the 7-day “Castles of Transylvania” route between Istanbul and Budapest through Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. Reviewers (Carmen’s Luxury Travel, The Luxury Holiday Company) single out the service and dining, live music, a dinner at Bran Castle and a Hungarian horse show. Dinner at Dracula’s place. Bring a turtleneck.

Agents listed remaining 2026 departures on 23 September and 23 October, and The Luxury Holiday Company starts at £9,600 per person in a Deluxe cabin (flights extra). Expect a late-night passport check at the border. Prefer Asia? Golden Eagle’s 22-day Grand Silk Road returns 30 Aug-22 Sep 2027.

Key Features

  • Istanbul ↔ Budapest, 7 days
  • Bulgaria + Transylvania castles
  • Dinner at Bran Castle
  • Hungarian horse show
  • Deluxe / Superior Deluxe cabins
  • From ~£9,600 pp (agent)

Best For: Travellers who’ve ‘done’ Western Europe and want Transylvania and the Balkans in sleeper-train style.

Visit / Book: www.goldeneagleluxurytrains.com

10. Resort Shirakami, Gono Line, Japan

Resort Shirakami
Resort Shirakami, Gono Line, Japan. Photo: MaedaAkihiko via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0.

The hook: Five hours of Sea of Japan coastline for the price of a regular ticket. Bring snacks and book seat A.

Operator: JR East · Route: Aomori ↔ Akita via the Gono Line (Sea of Japan coast / Shirakami-Sanchi), Japan

Resort Shirakami is the scenic ride Tohoku planners on r/JapanTravel and r/JapanTravelTips keep recommending. It’s a sightseeing train on the Gono Line between Aomori and Akita, hugging the Sea of Japan coast below the Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage beech forest. The government’s Highlighting Japan magazine featured the line in May 2026. Five hours of ocean views and convenience-store snacks. Honestly, therapy.

All seats are reserved and go on sale a month ahead. The sea is on the A-seat side. The full run is roughly five hours, but some services are shorter, so riding part of the line and back is a popular move. The Gono Line can be suspended in snow or high wind, so keep a backup day in winter.

Key Features

  • Sea of Japan coastline ride
  • Shirakami-Sanchi UNESCO beech forest
  • All-reserved seats; seat A for sea views
  • Full run ~5 hours Aomori-Akita
  • Sales open one month ahead
  • Weather suspensions possible in winter

Best For: Japan travellers heading north who want a cheap, gorgeous slow train instead of another shinkansen.

Visit / Book: www.jreast.co.jp/multi/joyful/shirakami.html
